A week off work, my two children and a little Isle of Wight escape before the school routine started again. A change from outfit ideas, but a lovely part of life to share too.
If you’re planning an Isle of Wight holiday with kids, it helps to have a few days out and food stops in mind. We visited The Needles and Alum Bay, explored Cowes, spent time at Sandown Beach and Pier, and went to Jay Miller’s Circus. There was plenty of ice cream along the way, too.
This is what we did across our stay, rather than a schedule to squeeze into one day. I’ve included the places we enjoyed eating because knowing where to go when everyone gets hungry is half the planning!
The Needles and Alum Bay with kids
The views at Alum Bay are beautiful. The chairlift is the best-known part of the attraction, taking you down towards the beach beside the cliffs, but there was more for us to do here than admire the scenery.
We watched a glass blowing demonstration and a sweet making demonstration. It was lovely to include activities where the children could see something being made, as well as the outdoor parts of the visit.
We also filled our own sand souvenirs. The Sand Shop offers 21 shades of Alum Bay sand, and choosing the colours makes the souvenir part of the experience. It gave us a little reminder of the holiday to bring home.
For me, that mix of views, demonstrations and something hands-on is what makes The Needles worth considering for a family day out. Don’t assume the chairlift is the only thing to put on your list.
Before you go: the official visitor FAQs say entry to the site is free, with activities paid for separately. Budget for parking too, and check the current charges. If you are visiting with younger children, read the chairlift rules before travelling: children under 1.4 metres must be accompanied, and chairs seat a maximum of two people. If you are the only adult with two small children, ask the attraction about arrangements in advance.
Cowes and breakfast at Pontoon View
Cowes gave us a chance to explore another part of the island. It’s home to the famous Cowes Week sailing regatta, and seeing the boats and waterfront was part of our visit. We visited the town rather than attending the regatta itself.
We also stopped for breakfast at Pontoon View, and it was really good. It’s at Cowes Yacht Haven, so it fits naturally into a visit to this part of town.
If you’re looking for breakfast in Cowes, this is one I’d save. I like having a food stop in mind alongside somewhere to explore, rather than waiting until everyone is hungry to decide. Check their current opening and breakfast service times before you go.
Sandown Beach and Pier: a proper seaside stop
Our time in Sandown was all about the beach, the pier, the arcades and ice cream. Sometimes those familiar seaside things are exactly what you want from a family holiday.
We spent time at Sandown Beach and visited Sandown Pier. It was a nice contrast to the demonstrations at The Needles and the boats in Cowes, with a different sort of holiday fun.
If you’re planning a similar stop, I’d leave room for both beach time and a wander around the pier, rather than making it all about one attraction. For our trip, Sandown brought together several of those simple seaside moments in one place.
Jay Miller’s Circus: one of my holiday highlights
Jay Miller’s Circus was one of my highlights of the trip. The show was fantastic, and it’s the experience I’d especially suggest checking when you’re planning your own visit.
The circus was celebrating its 40th anniversary during our 2026 trip. It made a lovely addition to the beach days and sightseeing, and gave us something completely different to enjoy together.
This is a touring circus, so don’t assume it will be on the island throughout the year. Check the current tour dates, venue and ticket availability before building it into your holiday plans.
Two more places we enjoyed eating
Alongside our breakfast in Cowes, we had lovely food at two pubs that I’d happily recommend saving for your trip.
The Woodmans Arms, Wootton
We had a lovely meal at The Woodmans Arms in Wootton. It’s one for your shortlist of places to eat on the Isle of Wight; check the current menu and food service times before you go.
The Vine Inn, St Helens
The Vine Inn in St Helens was another lovely food stop. We enjoyed our meal here too. Always useful to have a few places saved before everyone starts asking what’s for tea!
A few things to know before you go
Spread these stops across your stay and check a map before deciding what to pair together. Cowes and breakfast at Pontoon View work well as one outing; Sandown Beach and Pier make another natural pairing.
Check seasonal opening times, demonstration times and the weather before travelling to an attraction. At The Needles, some operations are weather dependent. For meals, check menus and availability directly, particularly if you have dietary requirements. Our trip was in August 2026, so details may change.
